Blog # 12 Apotheosis

In class on tuesday we talked about a word called apotheosis. This word means when a person finally realizes things about themself and about their life. So I started to think when could i have experienced this in my life. I thought , and thought and still nothing. So I started to think about some journeys i have taken and if i experienced this and when or what was it.

So finally I thought my journey to college. When I was in high school i knew i wanted to go to college but i wasn’t sure where I wanted to go. So finally after that I decided IUP was the right place for me. So during my trip to college I started off with no major. Until the second semester I still had no major I just couldn’t decide what i wanted to do with my life.

So finally after taking a criminology class I decided that’s what i wanted my major to be. I thought deeply into it and decided my exact major would be criminology pre-law. So I had an apotheosis in my life because right then and there I decided what I wanted to do with my life after college. I decided I wanted to be a defense attorney and it plays a role with the part of the definition where it says a person becomes selfless because I wanted to help people out.

Blog # 11 Samsara

In english 121 we just recently started a book called Siddhartha. This book was hard at first to read but im slowly warming up to it. This book really relates to our class theme. But one of the main themes in this book is called samsara. Which the meaning i have gotten from the book was unity, and peace with life.

Before this class I had never heard of samsara and had no idea what it meant. Without this book it brings it up over and over again, and how the main character is trying to find samsara. But when he finally stops trying to find it he realizes it finds him. His whole life he searches for samsara and travels to many places but finally at the end he finds it.

So I started to think if samsara was present in my life. Then I thought no because I do not yet have unity in my life. My life is not awalys peaceful. Plus there are still so many things I would like to do in my life. I think that true samsara comes when your life starts to settle down and you stop searching for peace, and my life is just starting up!

Blog # 10 Midterm Paper

In class we were told that we have to write a midterm paper for the class. At first I was like eh okay this can’t be that hard, then we were told we didnt have a topic. My opinion I had before fell out the window. I always hate papers that you chose your own topic for because then you dont have any structure. So anyways I thought about what I would do and had no idea where to start.

So finally I thought this class revolves around the hero and the monomyth and archetypes. So I decided I would incorporate both into my paper. I decided I was gonna say how all of the archetypes are present in my life and explain them and explain who is a real hero in my life and how they have followed the stages of the monomyth. I hope to learn and figure out how to know when an archetype is present in my life and how to bring archetypes to life and to make that extra trip on journeys I would not normally take.

I’m also confused, I thought Marlen said we didnt have to have any sources?

Blog # 9 Limen

For this blog we were asked what limen was and to explain it. I had no idea what the word limen meant or how to go about explaining it. When first looking up the definition I found nothing that actually told me what it was or what I could understand. When i heard the word limen I thought of lime disease i’m not sure why but that was what first came into my head. I thought that can’t be right because that has nothing to do with this class so I kept on searching.

Finally after looking at many websites I started to see a repeating trend. Every definition had the word threshold in it but then had a bunch of other words. So I tried to find examples and none of them made sense so finally I found a website that told me limen is a psychology term, which makes sense because our teacher used to be a psycho analyst. This website described limen as basically another name for a threshold.

From now understanding what this word means it does help to describe some of our english class. Our english class is based on the monomyth and within the monomyth is many thresholds that the hero has to journey throughout the call to adventure. So by saying it is the absolute threshold i would consider that the returning threshold because that to me would be the the absolute threshold because it is the last thing you need to do that is challenging to finally get home from your journey back to the life you once knew.

Blog # 8 Belly of the Whale

Following up on the whole monomyth idea is now the stage of the “belly of the whale”. At first reading over it, it was a little confusing. But then I realized that the belly of the whale is basically when the hero is stuck alone but finds the reason inside himself for the journey. So it is like a realization of why they are on this journey in the first place. They can come out as a totally different person with a different attitude towards their journey. So the way i would describe this stage would be a realization.

In the Painted Veil the main character goes through all of the stages of the monomyth so far. I would say that the belly of the whale moment for the character is when he moves to China and feels very alone because him and his wife are fighting, and he cannot find a cure for the cholera disease. But then he starts to think really hard about it and finds his purpose for the journey, he decides he is going to transfer water from the upward part of the stream and they were going to move the bodies so it didnt infest any of the new water they were gettin.g

I have had many journeys in my life. Along with that comes the many stages of the monomyth.I think that in my call to adventure for college has been an interesting one. The belly of the whale moment for me during this journey is when I first got here I was totally clueless and alone. I was struggling in my classes, but I started to think and realized that I needed to join an activity here and I needed to keep focus on my grades because that would make my journey here a whole lot better.
